Snakes

Yes, we have snakes, but then so did the Garden of Eden

We have tiger snakes and dugites, both venomous, which do a good job of keeping down the rodents, and don’t tend to bother us much. Unfortunately they probably also eat their share of our frogs. There are also said to be pythons, though we haven’t seen any.

Generally the tiger snakes and dugites are more scared of us than we are of them, so they keep out of the way. The tiger snakes are rather beautiful. I had a city-dweller’s phobia about snakes at first, and considered buying a gun to deal with any that got too close, but we’ve found that they’re not a problem to live with. I was amazed to read recently that a big tiger snake may be eighty years old! It would seem a pity to kill a creature that had survived in the wild for so long, wouldn’t it?
